Mare's Tail is a very attractive marginal plant with its Christmas tree like spikes growing out of the water. It can also be used as an oxygenating plant and is similar in appearance to Parrots Feather which is illegal in many states. It is native to California and North American wetlands. This perennial aquatic plant grows 2 feet tall. Single stems covered with short narrow green leaves grow in shallow areas of ponds, or at the rivers edge. Grows well either submerged in water or with “wet feet” at the water’s edge. Mare’s tail helps absorb unpleasant odors from decaying matter in marshes. Hippuris vulgaris is also known as common mare’s tail or marsh barren horsetail.
